Once the petals are cut out, I then hand hammer and form each petal to give the flower three demensional form. Then I weld the petals to the stem. Once welded, I hand paint each individual flower. Since each flower is handcrafted from my mind’s eye , NOT from any patterns, no two flowers are the same. And most of the flower shapes are never duplicated. That means each flower is a one of a kind. Currently, I only have (24) flowers made for our Deming Art Studio Spring Open House on May 10th, 2008. So get yours during the Spring Open House while they are in bloom!

It involves the elements of hand worked metal, stained glass and cement. When finished a lime green birdbath will sit a top the coil of metal. Dancing behind the hand sculpted birdbath will be the graceful cattails. And flying amid the cattails will be a stained glass dragonfly. Below the birdbath will be the lily pad in bloom floating on the water. And beneath the birdbath to be eyed only by the keen observer is the bullfrog getting ready to leap apon the lily pad. Want to see how this piece of handmade original fine art looks when it is completed? I neither sew nor am I a quilter but, I truly enjoyed this book. The designs of the quilts are filled with imaginary worlds, colorful birds, flying fish and mermaids. Laurel Burch’s bright fabric designs are beautiful and creative. The designs, colors, intricate applique work and nature’s energy in each piece took my breath away. Take a look at this book even if it is just to be inspired by the artist’s vision of nature.

For all you creative people and artists looking for a good book to read I highly recommend “Living The Creative Life-Ideas and Inspiration from Working Artists” by Rice Freeman Zachery (ISBN-13-978-58180-994-7) . The book provides inspirations for all levels of artists from full-time working artists to those considering becoming a full-time artist. I enjoyed the book because I got a glimpse into other artists lives and how they create . The book is filled with pictures of the commenting artists’ works and tips from the artists. I saw how they made the transition from day job to full-time artist. Through their creative processes, journals, muses and creative blocks, I realized that I myself as an artist was not much different from other artists. The book is filled with creative “Try This” assignments to jumpstart your creativity. Included in the book are insights from by artists Claudine Hellmuth, Michael DeMeng, Violette of the purple Magic Cottage, Susan Shie and more. They answer the questions you are longing to ask artists about their creativity, their lives and their creative processes. They help you find the answers to the artistic questions you have been asking yourself. The images of the artists work in this book are awesome!

This was an art prject that brought together artists, friends and the community. We decorated deer, did kids events downtown, hung out at the Fransworth Gallery and finished it off with a grand party at the chairperson’s home. I highly recommend similar art projects to other communities and artists.

My friend Amy had a great idea for an art project that would benefit Downtown Lapeer and bring artists together. At the time the project was conceived the Lapeer Art Association was still located outside of downtown Lapeer at Farnsworth And Daley Roads in the Farnsworth Gallery. Being Co-Chairperson of the Deer In Lapeer project was a real learning experience for me. We wrote and were awarded our first grant! We worked with local businesses on monetary issues, as well as , event coordination. Juggling businesses and creative artists was an interesting task. And while planning the whole event Amy and I still had to decorate our own deer sculptures. Artists took about three months to decorate their deer sculptures. Once completed the deer were herded up and put on display in the Historic Downtown Lapeer. During the event we had musicians, caricature artists, carriage rides, kids deer decorating, tracks scavenger hunt, coloring contests and more. The event was a huge success benefiting the local community and the downtown in many ways, as well as, benefiting the artists of the community. Deer In Lapeer helped bring people to their downtown and helped put the spot light onto local artists and their Farnsworth Gallery. Curious about the Deer In Lapeer?
Last summer my artist friends and I were looking for a fun art project we could participate in and network with other artists. During a conversation with my friend Marguerite, I mentioned the Studio 1219 Breast Cancer Awareness Art Project. Studio 1219 was looking for artists to decorate bras for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Throughout October 2007 the gallery, located in Port Huron Michigan, would have the bras on display, as well as , host seminars, luncheons and events pertaining to breast cancer awareness. As Margueirte and I came up with idea after idea on how we could decorate bras, I thought to myself we aren’t really going to participate in this project. But the next day Marguerite was calling me excitedly telling me about all the supplies she had bought for the project. So there we were on our way decorating bras. And what a challenge to get bras starched stiff enough to stand up like stone sculpture, to build an udder from bubble pop, felt & a pair of gardening gloves or to make a Moses from clay. But our creations were wonderful - The Udder Bra, The Parting of the C,s, HibisCups, CupCakes, Gambling Bra, Social Awareness Bra, bras from garden pots and more. To wrap up the Breast Cancer Awareness Project, Studio 1219 held a gala. What a party! There was food and drink accompanied by live music. And to top the evening off there were firemen wearing only their bib-overalls modeling bras! A wild fun time was had by all! And to this day if I walk through a lingerie department, I look at the bras and think of new ways to decorate bras. Want to view all the bras visit the My udder Bra link under My Favorite Links.
